Quick Tip: Working with Google API

When working with any of Google’s API’s you are asked to specify a directory that a key will be generated for, if you work with a site on a local testing server you probably have come across the “this key is in use” when you specify localhost as explained in this post the key is to specify a unique host name.

To do this open your hosts file which will normally be found in /etc/hosts on a Unix system or windows/system32/drivers/etc hosts on a Windows system (xp pro/2000)

you should have a file that looks like this

127.0.0.1 localhost computername

where computername is the unique name of your machine on the network I suggest you change this name to be unique, if its not there simply add it. When applying for your key use this name instead of localhost, just make sure its unique.

Google Custom Search Engine

Google Co-op has been around a little while but Google has just released in its full glory Google Custom Search engines(Site|Blog) for a full review on its features try Matt Cutts blog What I’m particularly interested in is the search api allowing results to be shown directly on your site as briefly explained here on Google ajax search blog they also have a couple of examples but they are long winded so I thought I would do the1 minute run through so here goes.

Firefox 2 released

While its not official till tomorrow Firefox 2.0 has been released (random blog|official site|official news), while perhaps not the spectacular upgrade everyone was hoping for its easily a match for IE7 more about that in another post, and is along with opera and safari back in the standards compliant camp after a brief walk in the park. Not many outstanding new features though microsummaries are almost certain to catch on.

Its nice to see XML and XSLT being used though I’m not yet convinced the average Firefox user could create a summary I’m sure most web developers will be adding summaries to their sites in the next few weeks, lets hope wordpress.com do, as there is already a WordPress plugin.

UPDATE: Darling wordpress seemed to forget this post, so its out of date but never mind firefox 2.0 has been released woot

Roaming The Web in Cambridge

Wifi Hotspots

Cambridge UK is one of the best cities in the UK in terms of WiFi coverage, the majority of phone boxes in the city centre have been updated to include wireless access, the downside is that these are mostly 802.11b but they are still there which is the main thing, the connection is charged by the “cloud network” and while there rates are reasonable they are far from cheap luckily there is some interoperability between the various networks, Tmobile is still I think the best when it comes to roaming. However all is not well in my little city of Ely, with only 5 WiFi hotspots, 2 are sadly in pubs that are not to my taste and one is well Starbucks the 5th is the Internet cafe just opened in Ely and its chances of staying open are limited unless it radically changes its tariff to well free. A good example of a successful internet café comes from the fist of its kind CB1 on Mill road in Cambridge I have many happy memories of student days after lectures in there, and the Internet side is still going strong. Another good example in Cambridge of good wireless is the Kingston arms pub which sells some of the best food in Cambridge and has a great attitude when it comes to dishing out the connections, what can be better then a pint and surf at the same time.

Google Mobile is it any good?

I tried Google mobile today (blog|site) sadly didn’t get very far too many timed out problems could have been my phone or them don’t know. But I have to say I like the idea paticularly gmail on your phone but how about hosted applications on your phone now that would be useful and something I didn’t cover in my wish list for hosted apps. The price of using the web on the move is coming down rapidly at least here in the UK with people like TMobile offering packages at just under £20 a month for 1gb transfer, and while that may not sound a lot of bandwidth its worth thinking about what you download to a phone, suddenly thats an awful lot of data. Unfortunately I tend to use my laptop and phone and then the bandwidth I use rises drasticly just picking up emails can be large downloads paticularly if I’m on windows. But if I could use my phone just for the quick looks at mail and calendar that would reduce the bandwidth providing the phone doesn’t run windows that is…

Windows Live Search sucks…

Sorry correction Windows Live method of crawling web site sucks I’m sure the interface is fine. We have been around a little time now, the blog is new but the main site www.venture-skills.co.uk has had content on it for several months, yet windows live search still has yet to pick it up. The top listing for Venture Skills is an American company specialising in web design, not to be confused with us the British company specialising in new media (fancy web design and the rest!) Google apps for your domain (part2)

Calender Features

In the first part of our look at Google apps for your domain (site) we looked at the mail interface and setting up shared email accounts. But Google apps is not just mail it has a comprehensive calender systems, that allows multiple users to create calenders and events send out Invites etc. It also has the ability to make a calender or event private to just a user, the group or allow anyone to see the calender. A nice privacy feature is showing only availability either busy or not. This is how we have our calenders set up, to help make appointments to see us as individuals, as I’m based in 2 cites I also include location details it would be nice to be able to select certain fields to be made public, such as location, or to provide an alternate contact, but this is a minor niggle. The big advantage to Google calender and its hosted equivalent is its various data forms ical, xml as well as plain html, this is built on top of Googles’ new Gdata API (blog|site) allowing programmers to access a range of of publishing options.

While not using the new gdata a simple modified rss parser ajax script can easily be displayed on your site as detailed here expect one on the www.venture-skills.co.uk soon. Hopefully with a little thought and code an appointment booking system using Google calenders on the site will not be far behind.

The other big thing is making Google calenders seamless with my everyday working, and since the one thing that is always open is a web browser and typically its Firefox, Eliaz Torres has developed a simple plugin to integrate Google calender into Firefox, this works well but only for non hosted accounts.

Using del.icio.us network feature to find relevant links

How do we search for something?

The Internet is vast and mostly a lot of lost pages with no links between one another originally the humble Hyperlink provided means to move from one page to another but unless you knew an address or stumbled on a link your chances of finding the page you want is slim. Then came the humble search engine and this changed or did they?

We all know the principle of search engines like Google and if you don’t there are plenty of articles on the mechanics of the web from Ho John Lee’s site though they are a bit technical you could also crawl through my de.icio.us accounts search tag and SEO tag. Search engines allow us to search through vast quantities of known links which are picked up either by users submitting those links or through a bot finding them, and while the page ranking system and similar algorithms used by the search engines are very clever they can not guarantee the content of the site. This became a problem in the late nineties as more and more link farms appeared in the search engines listings. Around the time the search engines developed managed directories also appeared including DMOZ these directories were maintained by humans rather then bots and often provided more relevant results, but these two were easy to fool principally because most categories only had one or a small group of editors.

So with the very abbreviated version of searching the web move on to more recent times and the craze of del.icio.us a very simple web site originally set up as a means to store your personal bookmarks it provided a useful place to centralise what for many was becoming an increasing mess particular if like me you moved from computer to computer. It has advantages for companies and groups centralising links to sites as well but the biggest advantage was its ability to view other peoples bookmarks and tags. This feature means that I can search through other peoples links to see what they have found this open several useful features;

  1. I can find targeted information based on keywords with more accuracy and with a level of trust.

  2. I can discount links from untrustworthy users

  3. I can find trends and patterns in possible customers/competition

  4. I can track reactions and opinions

del.icio.us like all social bookmarking has a built in system for getting rid of bad links by being time based the more relevant links should by routinely appearing at the top of tag pages, while the bad links sink down. This is obviously not the case for individuals but rather the collective as a whole. This type of linking has a downside popular linking can drown links easily if a site is featured on Digg or Slashdot you can be sure it will flood del.icio.us as well.

The biggest problem is that del.icio.us and similar site have to many users or rather you are trying to view to many users tags but by developing a network of known users with similar interests you can reduce the amount of search while still keeping relevancy. The network feature of del.icio.us does just that. By adding users with similar interests to myself to my network I can take a daily digest of posts and work with just these links, using some thought you can search within your network of users to find older information. But how do you find these similar users, well in the first instance looking at tags which match yours and finding users who provide good links is a good way to start. But the real advantage of the del.icio.us network is looking at the networks of those you have in your network.Del.icio.us network
For example if we look at my network

we can see that I have 15 people I watch on this account I regular add and remove people from my network but normally I have around 15 people. Out of the above group I will have found 2 maybe 3 from their web sites, another 2 from del.icio.us tags the rest come from the first 5 own networks in effect I’m trusting the original 5 to have only useful people in their networks and therefore already have a certain amount of trust for the newer members, and I can always un-subscibe those that provide duff links anyway.

Does all this work?

I thinks so by using the network feature of del.icio.us to create a trusted subset of people with common interest I can often find relevant sites quickly and easily, while del.icio.us is not yet a substitute for a search engine its not far of and is becoming more and more my first point of call.

This has been a bit of a long post but I hope to cover more tricks with del.icio.us and using it for information mining paticularly with the del.icio.us API.
