Calender Features
In the first part of our look at Google apps for your domain (site) we looked at the mail interface and setting up shared email accounts. But Google apps is not just mail it has a comprehensive calender systems, that allows multiple users to create calenders and events send out Invites etc. It also has the ability to make a calender or event private to just a user, the group or allow anyone to see the calender. A nice privacy feature is showing only availability either busy or not. This is how we have our calenders set up, to help make appointments to see us as individuals, as I’m based in 2 cites I also include location details it would be nice to be able to select certain fields to be made public, such as location, or to provide an alternate contact, but this is a minor niggle. The big advantage to Google calender and its hosted equivalent is its various data forms ical, xml as well as plain html, this is built on top of Googles’ new Gdata API (blog|site) allowing programmers to access a range of of publishing options.
While not using the new gdata a simple modified rss parser ajax script can easily be displayed on your site as detailed here expect one on the www.venture-skills.co.uk soon. Hopefully with a little thought and code an appointment booking system using Google calenders on the site will not be far behind.
The other big thing is making Google calenders seamless with my everyday working, and since the one thing that is always open is a web browser and typically its Firefox, Eliaz Torres has developed a simple plugin to integrate Google calender into Firefox, this works well but only for non hosted accounts.
