Just a quick post to note that Skype 3 Beta (blog)has just been launched, though before you race of to download its only for windows…
…expect the Linux version some time next year, however not to be to disheartened a couple of cool new features and some gimmicks
Genuinely useful features
- Conference calling ok they call it skypecasting but with up to a 100 users this can be a very cost effective method for long distance audio conferences though having listened into a skype cast the quality is appauling, not sure if its caused by one person or is a result of lots of bad mics.
- Public chats ok its a chat room but they have there uses don’t they?
The gimmicky stuff
- Share Links in mood messages (the new media age is finally here)
- Click to call (not a new feature) but heavily promoted allows skype to pick numbers off web sites and web owners to publish one click call buttons.
The new interface is nice though crowded, the Live tab takes you to the current skypecasts going on, the lack of the ribbon at the top is a little disappointing to get to SMS you now need to right click all in all a solid upgrade.

Nice review. I love skype and think that they are really doing a lot right with their company.

Well Ebay certainly thought so, I think nearly all the updates in Skype 3 are about getting it on the same playing field as Ebay which is not a bad thing I’m just not sure how consumer orientated it is.
By the way the click to talk optional firefox extension installs anyway…
