Old news for many I’m sure but I just came across this very handy tool from Microsoft, yes I know it surprised me to, I’m sure its full of bugs so don’t worry..

One of Windows more annoying facilities is its lack of mount options, anyone who has used Linux will know what I mean. This tool mounts ISO among other things as if they were CD’s I know revolutionary! but useful none the less. Here is how to set it up (note: its not as simple as it should be)

1. Download Virtual CD here (its for XP/2000 only)
2. It uses an auto extracter so unzip it some where you can remember
3. Move the VCdRom.sys to your system32/drivers folder in windows
4. Create if you haven’t already a permanently home for VCdControlTool.exe
5. run VCdControlTool.exe
6. Click driver control -> Install Driver if it doesn’t auto install the driver navigate to system32/drivers and select it.
7. Then: Start -> Ok
8. Followed by Add Drive choose a drive letter (make sure its not one in use it doesn’t check for you!)
9. Now if your ready to use it click mount and select your ISO and off you go
10. Quick Tip don’t forget to un-mount (eject) otherwise your system will slow down.

So a slightly bug approach from Microsoft.
Running the tool each time is a hassle, particularly as “un mounting” Ejecting the disc does not remove the drive.
