Its time to do a more in depth write up on Drupal and SEO there have been several floating around recently and hopefully this will help tie down the various ideas that have been floating around. But lets start with some of the simple bits like…

Getting past the deadly sins

I wrote a short article on the Deadly sins of SEO websites these sins were on the whole received well by readers though one blogger did I feel miss the point of the article (Though his follow up post is a remarkable piece of work and well worth a read! I love his idea of me on an ego trip), but to summarize these are the major sins I feel are committed by some companies and we all have done them in the past to which in my mind there are no excuses partly as some of them are legality and partly because they are common sense. Here they are:

  • No Alt attribute in image tags
  • Use of tables for design
  • Not using heading tags
  • Images instead of text
  • Failure to declare a doctype
  • failure to declare a language
  • Not using robot.txt or htaccess files to control spiders (and people)

Now people added several others including sitemaps, keywords in titles etc, but I initially want to concentrate on the Deadly sins. Luckily there is almost nothing that we need to do as Drupal has done most of the work for us, our template is CSS tableless design, we use alt tags as part of the standard practices built into Drupal (Though with the logo extra data was hard coded to give it a more accurate title) The doctype is declared correctly and it automatically picks up a language (Again we overrode this by declaring the language in the template though this is not needed it just happens we did this time) So the only real issue is when dealing with robot.txt and Htaccess files.

Google Analytics and Privacy laws plus P3P

I thought I would clear up to some misconceptions regarding the use of third party cookies on a site and in paticular statistic tracking cookies such as Google Analytics Urchin cookie. There are two misunderstandings regarding the use of cookies, 1 that its illegal to store a third party cookie on a persons computer, 2 it breaches accessibility guidelines neither of these are true. You do however need to declare the use of third party cookies both in your privacy document and in your P3P document and compact headers.

Google Analytics holds your data on machines in the United States and as such you need to reference that it is held under US law which may differ from local laws of the host site.

If you need further proof that its perfectly legal to use Google Analytics in the UK and elsewhere have a look at www.ico.gov.uk which is the site for the Information Commissioner’s Office the people who regulate and enforce privacy in the UK and who tracks stats using, guess what Google Analytics!

Reputation management its just SEO right?

I was doing the usual read of the feeds this evening and came across this post from SEOmoz and always a enjoyable read and this post was no exception regarding reputation management.

One of the points raised time and again regarding Reputation management is it ethical and morally correct? and as always you can take 2 views

1) You are manipulating not only your own site but other sites within the SERPs and therefore this is ethically wrong as you are effecting the natural order of Google!
2) urgh aren’t you an SEO company manipulating the search engines what you do?

Geo Targeting for search engines


I made a quick reply to a question posed on Marketing Chat forum but thought I would expand upon it here the question went,

The site was up until the start of last year US based, though about a year ago it was moved to UK servers.

He’s looking to get the site listed at #1 in the .co.uk version.

Apart from building links from UK based sites does anyone have any other ideas how this can be achieved? I’m guessing Google simply hasn’t recognised the fact that the site has moved.

Now I’m going to go out on a limb here and say I don’t think it makes much difference where your servers are located, or rather the difference is limited. This is based on anecdotal evidence we have run and maintained sites with .co.uk domains on servers in the UK, USA and Germany. We have also moved sites wholesale between providers and countries with no loss of position in SERPs. Now unless your looking for correlation tracking changes is very hard to do particularly when there are so many variables but we have been very successful in wholesale domain moves and have never noticed a problem. It also stands that as we move more to distributed systems for providing our hosts with processor power the physical location of the box will be less important.

So how then can we Geo-Target a domain to a specific country and in particular for Google?

Drupal running slow?

Quick tip for you if your Drupal is running slow, after a recent round of updating to make all our current Drupal 4.7 sites updated to the latest version of 4.7 I noticed several of the sites had slowed down to a crawl, after much prodding and checking to see why this maybe occurring and as I started to remove modules that maybe mysql intensive (which I thought was the cause of the problem) I ran the update.php script and would you believe it suddenly the speed was back.

Drupal 5 or 4.7?

So Drupal 5 has been out for a couple of months now but is it time to start your migration process?
Its ironic but in the last couple of months I have worked far more with Drupal 4.7 then 5, up until the launch of Drupal 5 I spent hours working with beta and RC builds checking compatibility and working on migration schemes to get our current sites, and our client sites over to the new Drupal as soon as possible, however as of today only venture-skills.co.uk and my own blog timnash.me.uk have been converted to the new version.
